Sports & Recreation Programs
Football and volleyball are where most young people first walk through MTB's door, and where
the organization does its quietest, steadiest work. Regular leagues, tournaments, and community
sports festivals give displaced and host-community youth a reason to show up week after week,
turning casual play into structured teams, rivalries, and routines that hold a community together
Youth Leadership & Empowerment
Beyond the pitch, MTB grooms the next generation of organizers, not just athletes. Leadership
training, structured mentorship, and entrepreneurship coaching turn players into team captains,
and team captains into community volunteers — building a pipeline of young people who go on
to run their own initiatives rather than wait for outside ones.
Peacebuilding & Social Cohesion
Refugee and host-community relations in Turkana aren't abstract policy — they're neighbors
sharing scarce land and water. MTB uses peace tournaments and community dialogue forums as
low-stakes, high-trust settings where that tension can be worked through together, using shared
sport and cultural exchange to prevent conflict before it starts rather than respond after it does.
Mental Health & Psychosocial Support (MHPSS)
For many young refugees, sport is the only space where they're not defined by displacement.
MTB treats recreation itself as therapy — building peer support groups and safe spaces around it
— while maintaining referral pathways to formal counseling for those who need more than a
football pitch can offer.
Gender Equality and Protection
Girls and women in the camp face steeper barriers to both sport and safety, so MTB runs GBV
prevention and child safeguarding work alongside — not separate from — its women's sports
programming, using the same teams and spaces to build both athletic skill and protective
awareness.
Talent Development & Referral Programs
Some of these young athletes are genuinely good enough to go further. MTB's coaching clinics
and talent identification work exist to catch that potential early and connect it — through referrals
to clubs, academies, and scholarship programs — to opportunities the camp itself can't offer.
Education & Life Skills
Sport is the hook; education is often the follow-through. MTB pairs its athletic programming with
life-skills training, civic education, and career guidance, so participation in a league can
translate into decisions about school, work, and the future.
Community Outreach
MTB's presence extends past its own programs — through school visits, community clean-ups,
and health awareness drives — reinforcing that the organization is a year-round community
fixture, not just a seasonal sports league.
